Psalm 67

What God gives us in never just for us.
It is meant to be shared.

These wise and challenging words from my friend, Donna, came to mind as I read Psalm 67.

This psalm is a prayer asking for God’s favor and blessing on His people for the purpose of making God’s saving power known to all nations.

Bless us, God, so that others will take notice and come to know You.

May God be gracious to us and bless us
and make his face to shine upon us,
that your way may be known on earth,
your saving power among all nations.
Let the peoples praise you, O God;
let all the peoples praise you! (v. 1-3 ESV)

This prayer echoes both the promise God gave to Abraham to bless all nations through him and the priestly blessing of Aaron.

“I will make you into a great nation,
and I will bless you;
I will make your name great,
and you will be a blessing.
I will bless those who bless you,
and whoever curses you I will curse;
and all peoples on earth
will be blessed through you.”
Genesis 12:2-3

The Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron and his sons, ‘This is how you are to bless the Israelites. Say to them:
“‘“The Lord bless you
and keep you;
the Lord make his face shine upon you
and be gracious to you;
the Lord turn his face toward you
and give you peace.”’
Numbers 6:22-26

God’s blessing on Abraham wasn’t just for Abraham. God’s blessing on Israel wasn’t just for Israel. God blessed them looking ahead to you and to me and to all the people on the earth today. Through Abraham and the nation of Israel, God would bless the entire world with His saving power through the Messiah, His Son, Jesus.

When we ask for God’s blessing and favor, are we thinking only of ourselves or are we looking ahead to how those blessings can point the nations to God?

God’s blessing is meant to be shared.

God’s blessing is meant as an invitation for others to come to know God.

What God gives us is never just for us.

God has given you His Word.
Give it away.

Teach His truth to someone in your house, in your neighborhood, in your city, in your region, and in countries around the world.

God has given you resources.
Give them away.

Invest in kingdom opportunities that make God’s ways and the power of His salvation known throughout the world.

God has given you life.
Give it away.

Live in such a way that others take notice and give God praise.

In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Matthew 5:16 ESV

And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Colossians 3:17 NIV

Bless us, God, so that others will take notice and come to know You.

Father, be gracious to me. I ask for Your blessing and favor so that I might make You known among the nations. Show me how to give away the truth I know, the resources I have, and the life you have given me for the sake of the gospel. May all the nations praise You, O God! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
