Psalm 62

If someone told you to find rest, where would you look?

It depends on what kind of rest you are looking for.

If your body needs rest, you would likely find it in a comfy bed in a quiet room that’s just the right temperature.

But if your soul needs rest, a bed won’t do.

The soul finds rest in God alone.

My soul finds rest in God alone;
my salvation comes from him. (v. 1)

A soul at rest is able to wait on God to work.

The ESV translates Psalm 62:1 this way:

For God alone my soul waits in silence;
from him comes my salvation.

Just as the body finds rest easier in a quiet environment, the soul finds rest in waiting quietly for God. Salvation is not up to us. Salvation comes from God. You can trust Him to act in His timing on your behalf.

A soul at rest is unshakeable.

He alone is my rock and my salvation;
he is my fortress, I will never be shaken. (v. 2)

When God is your Rock, your salvation, and your fortress, no circumstance can shake you loose from His protection.

My salvation and my honor depend on God;
he is my mighty rock, my refuge. (v. 7)

God is not distant. His protection and His salvation is personal. Like the psalmist, you can declare, “He is my Rock, my refuge, my salvation, the protector of my reputation.”

A soul at rest remembers hope comes from God, not a change in circumstance.

Find rest, O my soul, in God alone;
my hope comes from him. (v. 5)

Sometimes you have to remind yourself to remember the truth. When the enemy is attacking relentlessly or life is crashing all around, you need to remind yourself to actively find rest in God and to remember that true hope comes from God.

A soul at rest trusts in God, not possessions.

Trust in him at all times, O people;
pour out your hearts to him,
for God is our refuge. (v. 8)

Do not trust in extortion
or take pride in stolen goods;
though your riches increase,
do not set your heart on them. (v. 10)

Need rest, true soul rest? Trust God, not the size of your bank account. Trust God at all times, in scarcity and in plenty. Do not set your heart on increasing your possessions. Instead, pour your heart out to God. Tell Him what you need.

A soul at rest listens to God.

Once God has spoken;
twice have I heard this:
that power belongs to God,
and that to you, O Lord, belongs steadfast love. (v. 11-12a ESV)

When your soul needs rest, listen to God’s Word. Your soul needs to be reminded who God is, especially in difficult times when your emotions tell you things are impossible.

Power belongs to God.
Nothing is impossible for Him.

Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.” Mark 10:27

Steadfast love belongs to God.
Nothing can separate us from His love.

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39

Find rest in God.
He is your Rock.
He is your salvation.
He is your fortress.
When you find rest in Him, you will not be shaken.

Father, I look to You for the rest my soul needs. I will wait on You. My hope comes from You. I put my trust in You, not in my plans or my possessions. You are my Rock. You are my salvation. You are my fortress and my refuge. Nothing is impossible for You. Thank You that nothing can separate me from Your love. Help me hear Your voice of truth today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
