Psalm 61

God has given a heritage, or inheritance, to those who know Him, to those who fear His name.

God has given us prayer.

Hear my cry, O God,
listen to my prayer. (v. 1)

From the ends of the earth I call to You when my heart is faint. (v. 2a)

Wherever we are, even if we find ourselves at the ends of the earth, we can cry out to God in prayer and He will hear.

Whatever our circumstances, even when our hearts are faint or our courage is weak, we can pray and ask God for His help.

God has given us His perspective.

Lead me to the rock that is higher than I. (v. 2b)

God is often called our Rock, our shelter and stability. He also sees beyond what we can see from our human vantage point. Just as we might climb to a high rock to get a better view of the land below, we can ask God to show us His eternal perspective of our circumstances. His Word reveals His eternal view. He invites us to follow where He leads.

God has given us His protection.

For You have been my refuge,
a strong tower against the enemy. (v. 3)

God is our refuge, our safe place.
His name is our strong tower, our protection against the lies and attacks of the enemy. He is for us, not against us. His love for us will never fail.

The name of the Lord is a strong tower;
the righteous man runs into it and is safe. Proverbs 18:10 ESV

“No weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and this is their vindication from me,” declares the Lord. Isaiah 54:17

God has given us His presence.

Let me dwell in Your tent [Your presence] forever!
Let me take refuge under the shelter of Your wings! (v. 4)

God’s presence is our greatest reward.

More than promised descendants, land or protection, God told Abraham that He was Abraham’s great reward.

Don’t be afraid…I am your shield, your very great reward. Genesis 15:1

More than an angelic escort into the Promised Land, Moses recognized that nothing was worth more than God’s presence. Better to stay in the desert with God than go to the Promised Land without Him.

The Lord replied, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”
Then Moses said to him, “If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here. Exodus 33:14-15

Jesus promised the Holy Spirit. God’s presence would now be in us and dwell with us.

“If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.” John 14:15-17

Jesus promised to be with us until the end of the age.

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20

God has given us His promises.

For You, O God, have heard my vows.
You have given me the heritage of those who fear your name. (v. 5)

David wrote about the heritage God promised Abraham and his descendants. God promised Abraham descendants that would outnumber the stars, promised land that would forever belong to His people, and promised that He would bless every nation on earth through Abraham.

Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Israel, to whom you swore by your own self: ‘I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and I will give your descendants all this land I promised them, and it will be their inheritance forever.’ Exodus 32:13

God promised to send the Messiah to redeem His people from their sins. Jesus, God’s one and only Son, paid for our sins on the cross and made a way for us to be adopted into God’s family. Jesus has given us a living hope and a promised, eternal inheritance that will never fade.

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you… 1 Peter 1:3-4

Jesus promised that He would prepare a place for us in heaven to be with Him forever.

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. John 14:3

Until that day, God has given us His Spirit as a deposit, a promise to guarantee our eternal inheritance.

Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. 2 Corinthians 1:21-22

Those who worship God and fear His name have a beautiful inheritance.

Thank God for your heritage of faith today.

Father, thank You for the spiritual heritage You have given me through Your Son, Jesus. Thank you for the privilege of prayer. Give me your perspective on the circumstances that surround me. I need Your protection today. Thank You for the deposit and guarantee of the Holy Spirit, for Your very presence that dwells in me. Your presence is my greatest reward. Thank You for the promises of Your Word, written down so that I read them again and again. Thank You for my eternal inheritance. I long for the day I am with You face to face. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
