Psalm 59

Words matter.

Words can bless, or words can wound.

The tongue has the power of life and death… Proverbs 18:21

Psalm 59 is a prayer for deliverance from a vicious attack of slanderous words.

David’s enemies use their words as weapons, spewing false accusations like swords. Filled with pride, they prowl around under cover of darkness like a pack of dogs terrorizing a city, thinking no one can stop them.

In contrast, David uses his words to pray and to praise.

David prays and asks God for deliverance from his enemies attacks and lies.

Deliver me from my enemies, O God;
protect me from those who rise up against me. (v. 1)

I have done no wrong, yet they are ready to attack me.
Arise to help me; look on my plight! (v. 4)

For the sins of their mouths,
for the words of their lips,
let them be caught in their pride.
For the curses and lies they utter,
consume them in wrath,
consume them till they are no more.
Then it will be known to the ends of the earth
that God rules… (v. 12-13)

David begins his day with praise, celebrating the refuge he finds in God, his fortress, and singing about God’s strength and love. David sets his focus on God in the morning.

But I will sing of your strength,
in the morning I will sing of your love;
for you are my fortress,
my refuge in times of trouble.
O my Strength, I sing praise to you;
you, O God, are my fortress, my loving God. (v. 16-17)

Recognizing that God is his shield and protection, David does not retaliate against his enemies with his own war of words. Instead, David chooses to make prayer and praise the priority for his words.

We choose our words.

Words can bless, or words can wound.
Words have the power of life and death.

Troubles come.
But I will sing.

If we set our focus on God in the morning, if we put our confidence in His love and protection, we can choose to praise even in times of trouble.

Father, You are LORD God Almighty. You are my shield. You are my Strength. You are my fortress, my safe refuge in times trouble. Help me to set my focus on You each morning. Help me use my words to bless and give life. Fill my heart with songs of Your love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
