Psalm 58

Injustice.

This broken planet is filled with it. The powerful take advantage of the weak. Laws are applied unfairly. The wicked use violence to get their way.

Do you rulers indeed speak justly?
Do you judge uprightly among men?
No, in your heart you devise injustice,
and your hands mete out violence on the earth. (v. 1-2)

Psalm 58 is a prayer for justice, for God to judge the wicked and avenge the righteous. It is an honest prayer, with vivid language expressing a longing for the wicked to be punished. It is also a prayer of trust in the timing of God’s judgment.

The righteous will be glad when they are avenged… (v. 10a)

Then men will say,
“Surely the righteous still are rewarded;
surely there is a God who judges the earth.” (v. 11)

When we see injustice, we can pour out our hearts and emotions to God in prayer, asking Him to make things right.

When we see injustice, we can remember these things.

  • God is a God of justice.

And the heavens proclaim his righteousness, for he is a God of justice. Psalm 50:6

  • Earthly leaders may fail to judge rightly, but God’s justice will prevail.

Many seek an audience with a ruler, but it is from the Lord that one gets justice. Proverbs 29:26

  • God will show compassion while you wait for justice.

Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you; therefore he will rise up to show you compassion. For the Lord is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him!

Isaiah 30:18

  • No one escapes God’s judgment.

…the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials and to hold the unrighteous for punishment on the day of judgment. 2 Peter 2:9

  • Don’t stop seeking justice.

Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow. Isaiah 1:17

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Galatians 6:9

God is a God of justice. One day, He will make all things right.

Father, when I see injustice, remind me that You are a God of justice. When I experience injustice, remind me that no one escapes Your judgment. While I wait for Your justice to prevail, be gracious to me and show me compassion. Help me to not become weary in doing good. Show me how to seek justice and defend the oppressed. I place my trust in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
