When disaster strikes, what can we do?
We can do what David did.
Hunted by King Saul, hiding from his pursuers in a cave, David cried out to God in prayer. His prayer is recorded in Psalm 57.
When disaster strikes or enemies pursue us, we too can turn to God and cry out to Him.
We can take comfort in His presence.
Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me,
for in you my soul takes refuge.
I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings
until the disaster has passed. (v. 1)
We can find refuge, a safe place, in God’s presence until the disaster has passed. Like a mother bird hides her young under a protective wing in times of danger, God will hold us close and protect us from disaster when we cry out for mercy.
We can find confidence in His love.
I cry out to God Most High,
to God, who fulfills his purpose for me.
He sends from heaven and saves me,
rebuking those who hotly pursue me;
God sends his love and his faithfulness. (v. 2-3)
God loves us. He is faithful at all times. He is God Most High. He will fulfill His purpose for us. No disaster is powerful enough to stop His plans. We cry out to this God, this sovereign, loving, and faithful God and He will send from heaven to save us.
When we are confident in His love, our hearts are steady even in the midst of disaster.
My heart is steadfast, O God,
my heart is steadfast;
I will sing and make music. (v. 7)
We can renew our commitment to praise.
Be exalted, O God, above the heavens;
let your glory be over all the earth. (v. 5, 11)
I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations;
I will sing of you among the peoples.
For great is your love, reaching to the heavens;
your faithfulness reaches to the skies. (v. 9-10)
When we take refuge in God’s presence and have confidence in His love, we won’t wait until the disaster has passed to praise Him. We will long to see His glory fill the earth. We will sing of the great love and faithfulness of God Most High among all people, all nations. We will not let our current circumstances stop us from our eternal purpose of making disciples in all nations. We will praise!
Comfort in His presence.
Confidence in His love.
Commitment to His praise.
When disaster comes, cry out to God Most High for mercy.
Take refuge in His love and faithfulness.
Let your glory be over all the earth!
Father, You are God Most High. Your love reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness reaches to the skies. My heart is steadfast, knowing that You love me and will hide me in Your presence when disaster comes. My heart is steadfast, knowing that You will fulfill Your purposes for me. I will tell the nations of Your love and faithfulness. Let your glory fill the earth! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
