above all…love

1 Peter 4:7-10
The end of all things is near.
Therefore, be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray.
Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.
Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.
Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

What are we to do today in light of eternity?

Pray.
Love.
Serve.

In these difficult days, how can we pray, love, and serve? We can’t in our own strength or by human willpower. But because we have the empowering Spirit of the living God, we can choose to live for the will of God instead of our own desires.

Pray regularly.
The fruit of the Spirit we have been given includes self-control. We need discipline to choose to pray (I know I do!). And when we pray, the Spirit helps us see and think about our circumstances from God’s perspective, not our own. We have the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16).

Love deeply.
The fruit of the Spirit we have been given includes love. We love others because the Father first loved us (1 John 4:7-12, 19). This love is action, not emotion. This love is patient and kind. This love protects, trusts, hopes, and perseveres. This love covers our sins and the sins of others. This love never fails. Is it any wonder that Peter says that in these days, love deeply above all else?

Serve faithfully.
The fruit of the Spirit we have been given includes faithfulness. It is a normal human reaction to want to quit when things get difficult. or when we do not receive recognition or appreciation. But the Spirit empowers us to faithfully serve, not in our own strength but with the strength that God provides. You have been given unique spiritual gifts from the Father through the Spirit. Using those gifts to serve others brings praise and glory to Him.

The end of all things is near. In light of eternity, pray.

The end of all things is near. In light of eternity, love.

The end of all things is near. In light of eternity, serve.

And if you can do only one, remember this:
Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.

pray regularly
