Find rest, O my soul, in God alone;
my hope comes from Him.
He alone is my Rock and my salvation;
He is my fortress, I will not be shaken.
My salvation and my honor depend on God;
He is my mighty Rock, my refuge.
Trust in Him at all times, O people;
pour out your hearts to Him,
for God is our refuge.
In his Psalms, David teaches us something critical to navigating life on this broken planet. David shows us that it is safe to pour our hearts out to God, to share our messy thoughts and our questions. In addition to talking to honestly to God, David also demonstrates the importance of talking back to ourselves, of actively confronting our thoughts with truth.
David turns the truth around and tells himself, “Find rest…in God alone.” Other versions say, “For God alone…wait.”
Stop. Wait. Rest.
In the midst of his questions and chaos, David stops and reminds himself to wait, to find rest in the truth of who God is – a rock, a solid place to stand; a fortress, a safe place to hide; a refuge, a place to repair and renew; our savior, the source of hope.
Like David, we make truth personal when we preach it to ourselves in the midst of our changing circumstances.
May you find rest today in God, your mighty Rock.
